Five Tips to Start Hearing Back & Land the Interview

I am not going to lie to you, the job search is hard right now. No amount of career advice will change the fact that unemployment is still high, companies are still in hiring freezes and the candidate pools are larger than before.

The question is, what are you going to do?

The answer is, you have more control than you think.

Be strategic on the roles you apply for (don't mass apply).

Find open positions on large job boards but always apply on the company's website; if it's not there, it's not active.

Tailor your resume and cover letter to the reader; don't just submit your tenure. This is YOUR opportunity to speak DIRECTLY to the company and the individuals making the hiring decisions.

Leverage your network. You will land the interview one of two ways - your resume from an applicant pool or a referral. Why not double down on your chances and utilize both?

Don't stop. Don't let your confidence slide when you hear no. Let that rejection be the lucky charm that leads you to the role you would have never had if that company had said yes.

To end with a quote from Coach Bill from the Netflix documentary Undefeated "The character of a (wo)man is not measured in how (s)he handles his/her wins, but what (s)he does with his/her failures".

"How I turned a ‘no’ into a ‘yes’! I was almost on my way to Hollywood to film the first season of Shark Tank 12 years ago when I was told the show had changed their mind. I'm smiling bright today about the letter I wrote to the big boss that turned my fortune around and the 12 wonderful years I’ve spent helping entrepreneurs make their dreams come true on Shark Tank."
